June 30, 2026 Fifth-generation BMW X5: five drivetrain variants in one model With the fifth generation of the X5, BMW brings together five different drive system technologies in a single model for the first time – complemented by the innovations and design language of the Neue Klasse. The car becomes a milestone because it is “the brand’s first model on the market with a choice of five different drive system types”. It is offered with a petrol engine, a diesel with mild-hybrid technology, a plug-in hybrid, the fully battery-electric iX5 version and, in addition, a variant with a hydrogen fuel cell. The SUV has also been revised on the outside: the front end now stands upright, the BMW kidney grille is vertically oriented and features Iconic Glow, joined by new light icons in a “Double-X” look. Eleven paint colours are available for the exterior, and the wheels can reach diameters of up to 23 inches. The core technologies of the Neue Klasse also reappear in the interior: the new BMW Panoramic iDrive display together with its associated control system, which is based on BMW Operating System X. Adaptive suspension is fitted as standard; together with an almost perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, it underlines the claim to be “the sportiest SUV in its segment”. Series production starts in August 2026 at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the USA; the model is scheduled to go on sale at the end of November 2026.
