Die Büffelhornpfeife hat zwei Töne: einen Pfeifton und einen Trillerton. So lassen sich zwei unterschiedliche Signale geben, etwa für Rückruf und Stopp. Sie wird in der Jagdhundeausbildung und im allgemeinen Hundetraining verwendet und ist auch über weite Entfernungen gut hörbar. Ein Lederband zum Umhängen hält die Pfeife griffbereit.
