Bavarian eco-pioneer celebrates 25 years of organic brewing

Riedenburger Brauhaus has been producing exclusively organic for 25 years (Riedenburg, 07.10.2019) Riedenburger Brauhaus is celebrating a very special anniversary this year: 25 years ago, on 1 April 1994, the brewery converted its production to 100% organic, making it the first brewery in Bavaria to brew entirely according to organic guidelines.

The brewery owners Michael and Martha Krieger had many reasons for converting to organic, but the ecological principle always came first. Krieger wanted to brew beer again the way his ancestors had done: without cultivated grain varieties, without filtration and without hop extract. "The key was the organic raw materials," says the eco-brewer.

The Kriegers converted to organic step by step. In 1989, the new administrative building was constructed according to purely ecological principles, after which the groundwater well was replaced with a spring water well. In 1992, the first two Riedenburger beers with the organic label came onto the market, and since April 1994, 100% organic products have been processed.

Michael and Martha Krieger took the organic gamble – at a time when organic had a low status. "Organic doesn't taste good" – that was the widespread opinion. "After the conversion, we suffered serious losses in sales. But giving up was never an option for us." With their high quality standards and a wide variety of speciality beers, the brewery was able to win over even die-hard organic sceptics and establish itself as an organic brewery whose products are sold throughout Germany and now in 17 countries worldwide.

Junior manager Maximilian Krieger has been running the organic brewery in the eighth generation since 2015. "To achieve the best quality, detours are necessary," the business graduate and master brewer is convinced. Doing without extracts and filtration, focusing on grain varieties with a high protein content and allowing sufficient maturing times are essential for the organic brewer in order to turn a beer into a wholesome food.

In addition to the classic beers, Maximilian Krieger brews five ancient grain beers. "Ancient grain is particularly valuable and interesting in terms of taste," he is convinced. Even the brewed organic lemonades are based on fermented spelt malt. Six innovative craft beers and regular special brews round off the range.

Through many years of cooperation with regional contract farmers, the Benedictine abbey of Plankstetten and the Bioland association, the family brewery ensures that customers receive products made from natural raw materials and of consistently high quality. Both demand and customer satisfaction prove the Kriegers right: while other German breweries are weakened by declining sales in the beer market, Riedenburger Brauhaus has recorded positive business development for almost 20 years.
